NSE Index Watch: Biggest winners and losers of 2022

Published: December 11, 2022 at 6:00 am

With only three weeks left to go in 2022, we look at the biggest winners and losers in the NSE index universe. We look at the trailing one-year return as on 9th Dec 2022, as much of the performance falls in 2022.

Disclaimer: No part of this article should be considered investment advice. One year is too short a time to judge any index, but this data gives you a sense of what to expect (agony or ecstasy) while holding an index or related stocks or mutual funds.

Here are some results that caught our attention:

  • Nifty IT TRI was the worst performer with a -17.1 return.
  • The biggest surprise (IMO) is NIFTY Midcap150 Quality 50 – TRI with a -5.4 return. This is the 7th worst performer! Compare that with 5.45% for Nifty Midcap 150 – TRI. That is quite a gap! Although the quality index is hard to beat by active mid cap mutual funds, investors must appreciate that the quality factor has an arbitrary definition and will be subject to poor sequences of returns from time to time.
  • Nifty200 Momentum 30 – TRI: -2.8%. As we had shown earlier, momentum indices suffer when there is insufficient market momentum. See: Momentum index fund: Will tactical entry/exit give better results?
  • NIFTY NEXT 50 – TRI managed to stay on the right side with a  3.6% return, although still below Nifty 50 TRIs 7 %.
  • Nifty100 Low Volatility 30 – TRI 6.4%. The same caution mentioned for quality factor (or any other factor) also applies here.
  • Nifty100 Equal Weight – TRI 4.5% vs NIFTY 100 – TRI 6.4%
  • NIFTY50 Equal Weight – TRI 9.9% vs Nifty 50 TRI 7 %. So active fund managers had some scope to beat the Nifty 50 (which heavily depends on the top few stocks).
  • The top five performers are:
NIFTY SME EMERGE – TRI79.5%
NIFTY PSU BANK – TRI61.4%
Nifty CPSE – TRI28.9%
NIFTY FMCG – TRI23.4%
NIFTY METAL – TRI22.7%
NIFTY BANK – TRI18.6%
