How to create a family crisis management cheat sheet

Published: November 2, 2022 at 6:00 am

In this article, we share a risk assessment spreadsheet created by Suresh Murugan and discuss how it naturally works as a family crisis management cheat sheet.

Suresh is no stranger to crisis. He met an accident the day he got married and learned key money lessons. Since this personal financial audit was shared with readers, his life changed for the better significantly. He also shared an update: I felt worthless six years ago but have achieved financial stability today.

The freefincal community received both articles well, and many thanked Suresh for his inspiring account. Suresh works in a factory where they routinely do risk assessments and crisis management. So he has used the same principles in personal finance and family crisis. Specifically, he has created a simple spreadsheet to handle outlier risks.

You may have seen hospital posters listing different codes and the steps staff should take for each. For example. code blue represents cardiac arrest; code red is fire; code pink is infant abduction etc. In the case of an emergency, staff can simply follow the instructions given in the protocol. Suresh’s crisis management cheat sheet has a similar goal.

It will tell our spouse or family precisely what to do in case of a death, hospitalization etc. This is a screenshot.

We had earlier discussed how to create a “continuity kit” to help our life partner manage money in our absence. Suresh’s spreadsheet (download link below) is an excellent addition to this. Crisp instructions can be added as an executive summary with details in another sheet.

The cheat sheet also serves as a list of action items to be implemented. The sheet is shared “as is”, and many entries are relevant only to Suresh. They have not been edited out as it lends perspective. Please change the sheet to suit your requirements. It is an excel file but will open in any spreadsheet utility.

You can also consider inserting the sheet into our portfolio tracker – Track your mutual fund and stock investments with this Google Sheet!
