Subra’s retirement planning lecture videos

P V Subramanyam, CA, author (retire rich) and blogger(subramoney.com) spoke on retirement planning to a group of about 50 people last year (May 29th 2015) at Chennai. Here are the videos (a re-post).

Note: The videos were shot by me using a DSLR. The audio is decent without a headphone and pretty good with a headphone and mid-level volume. The camera was not panned. So Subra will step out of frame for a few seconds. I did not know that camera only shoots 30-minute videos. So there will be a break of about a minute or so between parts.

The last part where he handles questions is incomplete. You will not be able to hear the question clearly (there was neither a mike for the audience nor an audio feed to the camera), but you can make out what it was from Subra’s answer.

Suggestion: View the videos once. Then you can listen to them as audio files. You will be able to appreciate it better.

Subra was here for a family wedding. He told me as early as Feb. that he would be free only on the evening of the 29th and can speak if an event can be organised.

The talk was thought provoking and filled with humour. I think it is safe to say that everyone who registered enjoyed it. I hope you do too. Please do spare a moment to thank Subra (here, his blog, FB or AIFW).

  9. Thanks, dear Pattu, for donning the cap of a cameraman-knowing your passion for things you set your heart on,very soon we can expect a post on “Dos and Don’ts of videography” 🙂

Special thanks to Subra for an enlightening presentation sprinkled with his usual wit and humour. And for confirming that luck plays a greater part in successes that are not based on MDBSC-which I have always claimed to be the case in my personal financial journey(though you have like a true friend always attributed more skills to my success) 😀

    1. Thank you, sir. To be at the right time and at the right place has an element of luck, yes. It is however not only because of luck. Your tenacity, recognition of an opportunity, ability to stomach the volatility among other factors have played a more important role. It is rare for an investors return to be equal to that of the asset class!

  11. Awesome video and thanks for sharing it. The clarity of message from Subra is amazing. Many thanks to him too. If I had known Tamil I would have enjoyed the jokes more but the intent is crystal clear.
Next time you should also appear for a cameo 🙂
One suggestion – DSLR is usually not a great choice for video recording. Probably today’s mobile camera would do a better job without limit of 30 mins. But may be multiple videos are also good.

  12. The GEM that I got from videos is answer to my doubt. Why others are not so intersted to follow personal finnace basisc? As SUBRA SIR said -it is too simple ,that is why it is not being practised. We,the indians , probably despise SIMPLICITY,& respect with an awe THE COMPLEXITIES.
And precisely that may be the reason why HARSHAD MEHTAS CLASS is able to dupe us ,because we do not follow simple, look for complex, hardly we understand a bit of complex,so it creates fetile ground for scams.
Bad enough, as I am gujarati,do not follow local language, can not get better of humour & wit of SUBRA SIR.
THANK YOU A LOT FOR SHARING IDEAS
    WISH YOU ALL, ALLTHE BEST

  13. Mr.Pattu,
Thanks a lot for sharing this nice informative video.
Thanks to Mr.Subra for such a nice explanation.
Your both service on educating people is highly appreciated

  14. Thanks for such a selfless service sir. The most important thing for all of us now is Action … Will do so..

Thanks again to both of you Sir

  15. My impaired hearing does not permit me listen to the video. Can I see it in writing please?

  16. Thank you for giving us a ring side view to Subra’s awesome lecture. The message was simple, concise and to the point. This video series should be a part of every DIY investor’s must watch list.

  17. Had a very good coverage on retirement planning and investing. Thank you for sharing the videos. Typical Subra sir style session, but would’ve loved to hear strong conviction on ‘what would convince a novice investor to keep SIPping no matter what the market condition is?’ and ‘why is equity better asset class than debt over long term?’

  18. Awesome Subra Sir!!! Just listened to the whole series today. Enjoyed it a lot! Thank you 🙂
And…. Even I cannot meet the medical expenses of my hospital! 3 days back, I came to know that I am not covered in hospital group insurance for employees also.Though the employee book mentions it as a right! the excuse was- you are a retainer!!!! Applied for it immediately for the premium to be deductd from my salary. Everything is business alone…. Sad!

  19. Thanks a lot Pattabiraman Murari and Subramoney . It is very good information. Yes most or all of them are available in freefincal, but it is another view to hear from some one else as well. Yes, time, patience and luck plays a big role in investment. Thanks again

  20. Respected Sir,
Nice video. Very very informative. Thank you for sharing. I never knew such kinda workshop is being happened for educating the indian folks. How can we join such workshop’s? Do this workshop being conducted outside of Chennai, i.e. in Kolkata or in the Eastern part of India?

  21. Liked Subra’s approach ‘Keep It Simple and Specific (KISS)’ and not to make it a rocket science.

  22. First time, got a chance to hear Subra speak.. Could relate his witty speech with his writing.

Thank you for posting this video for such a wider audience.

  23. Awesome, Enjoyed watching every video.
Thanks for posting and educating us.
I watched it from Pune. Hope I will be able to attend any of your coming session :).

    Thanks,
    Nikhil

  24. Pattu Sir, thank you for re-forwarding for those who missed like me. The tips on listening you shared were also really helpful. I wish I were in the workshop itself.

The big learning for me was on how to approach towards risk (eg: Event not happening tends to think no risk, Grandfather did not die for 89 years does not mean there was no risk). These simple comparisons have made me to internalize the concept and address it better. Thank you.

  25. Simple… True… Practical… Must watch for every investor who is starting to invest… I have personally experienced all what he said and thanks for sharing…
