IPPB App Review: How to set up; Features, benefits & limitations

This a review and user guide of IPPB App or the India Post Payments Bank Mobile Banking App. How to set it up, features, benefits and limitations authored by Pratik Jain. India Post has long remained an offline bastion of the small saver. However, it has failed to keep up with internet penetration in the country. It has only recently pushed digital post office transaction with the IPPB App and Post Office Internet Banking (How to register & features available).

The India Post Payments Bank (IPPB) was launched in Sep 2018 and so far there are 3250 access points. This is only about 2% of the 1.55 Lakh post offices spread across the country. An easy to use online service is essential to grow its popularity in the urban population especially among senior citizens (at least via their children). Let us find out more about the IPPB App.

What is IPPB?

IPPB stands for Indian Post Payments Bank, it was launched by the government to make banking services available at doorstep. This Indian Postal Department will work via a network of Post Offices. There are various services available under this such as Mobile banking, SMS Banking, Missed Call Banking etc. You can check more details about these services from their website.

In this article, we will be talking about Mobile Banking Services offered by IPPB. These Mobile Banking Services are offered via their Android app you can download here.

Account Opening with IPPB App

Existing User

If you already have IPPB Account opened at Post Office/ via Postman then you can click on option ‘existing customer’. Enter details such as Account number, Customer ID and registered mobile number you will receive an OTP. After verifying OTP you will be able to access your account via this App.

New User

If you are a new user then you can open a digital account online. This account has some restrictions and you need to open a regular savings account within 12 months. This service is available at doorstep. You can call on Toll-free number to request for a doorstep account opening service or you can also visit the nearest branch. Digital account opening service is currently on hold due to the supreme court’s judgment on Adhar Based KYC but you can always request for regular account opening at the doorstep.

1. View Statement

You can view the last 10 transactions of your India Post Payments Bank’s account. If you have Post office savings bank account linked to IPPB’s account you can add that account here too. You can request for bank statement via email or by post.

2. Send Money

Fund transfer between other IPPB accounts or other bank accounts is possible. Before sending money you should add the account number and IFSC of the beneficiary in Manage beneficiary section. If you have POSB account you can sweep in/out money in that account from your IPPB account. Pay by QR code facility is also provided where you can transfer money to other IPPB account holder by scanning his QR code.

3 Other Services

You can request for a new cheque book via post or stop payment of the specific cheque. The IPPB account holder can update his Nominee, Adhar number, PAN card and Address from this section.

A new DOP(Department of Post) services section is added recently. In this, you can transfer money in PPF account, Sukanya Samridhi account. You can start a new Recurring Deposit. There is an option to apply for a loan against already running Recurring deposit.

4. Pay Bills

Paying bills is also possible via the IPPB app. The user can pay for Electricity, Landline/Broadband, Gas, Water bills. You can recharge Postpaid Mobile or DTH. Tax, Loan repayment, and Insurance Payment are also possible with this app. The money will be deducted directly from your IPPB Account.

1.Tons of Glitches

Glitches will start right from the login screen and on almost every button/ screen you see there is some kind of problem! There are many apps on play store which are in beta phase but this app is a mine of problems. This is the biggest disadvantage of the app as of now. We should not compare or expect this app to be as good as other private banks app. But many of the above-mentioned services are not working as of now. Before adding any new service these glitches needs to be fixed.

2. PPF account and RD

Recently, the app has given an option of DOP services. But we can’t open PPF account here, only transfer of money is possible. If IPPB gives the option to open PPF account online it will be good as private banks are not interested in spreading these services. For recurring deposit also you already need recurring deposit account then only you can start new RD.

3.Digital Account

There is a limitation on digital account that it needs to be converted into regular account in 12 months. After the Supreme court’s judgment on stopping Adhar based KYC, Digital account opening is stopped. You need a regular saving account to log in and use any services.

Final words:

If you already have an account in IPPB then this app will help you in accessing many services online. If you live in a rural area where Pvt banks are not densely populated then IPPB gives doorstep services via a network of Post Offices and Postman. Though the app has several glitches it is a good step towards Digital India. If the app focuses on giving more DOP services online via this app it will be beneficial.
